KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan and Iran have agreed to set up joint committees to further strengthen cooperative relations in different fields.

The committees will work to boost bilateral links in the fields of politics, security, investment, trade, customs, refugees, water, energy, culture, science and education.

Inamullah Samangani, deputy spokesman for the government, said Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar met Iranian special envoy for Afghanistan Hassan Kazimi Qomi and the delegates accompanying him at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday afternoon.

The meeting was also attended by a number of ministers and other officials. Baradar welcomed the delegation and thanked Iran for its assistance to Afghanistan in various fields.

Qomi was quoted as saying: “Today, Afghanistan is under the control of its real sons of the soil and that its occupation is over.”

He called Afghanistan and Iran two Muslim countries with common interests, religion and culture. The neighbours should further strengthen cooperation in various areas, he believed.

The current situation offered an opportunity that was in the interest of the Islamic world, the region, the Afghan people and both countries, he remarked.

In a statement, Samangani said the joint bodies had been instructed to meet soon to discuss long-term cooperation, launch projects and reach necessary agreements.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi also met Kazimi Qomi, Special Envoy of the Iranian President for Afghanistan and the delegation led by him.

During the meeting, bilateral issues were discussed, with both sides having similar views on economic, trade and development projects. They emphasised on the continuation of bilateral meetings.
