KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): A health center funded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been constructed and put into service in southern Kandahar province.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Philip Grande, UNHCR head of Asia and Haji Mohammad Yousaf Wafa, the governor of Kandahar and other officials.

Grande said the health center had two main corridors, 18 rooms and four bathrooms and was built in six months at a cost of $212,723.

He was glad over the establishment and opening of the health center, saying the UN was committed to assisting Afghanistan in different fields.

According to him, Afghanistan is a priority for the UN to provide assistance to the refugees in this country, especially in Kandahar, in addition to health facilities, shelter, education and other areas.

Kandahar governor Haji Mohammad Yousaf Wafa said the construction of the health center would alleviate the health problems of the residents of the 12th police district.

He added donor institutions would be able to implement their programs in each area because security had improved.

He emphasized that remote areas should be focused more because the residents of these areas had been deprived of facilities in the past 20 years.

Mohammad Usman, an elder of the 12th police district, said they were happy with the establishment of the health center but urged the government to appoint qualified doctors and provide required equipment.
