PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan’s new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will strengthen cooperation and partnership with Russia on the Afghan issue, hopes President Vladimir Putin.

In a message, the Russian leader said on Tuesday: “Dear Mr. Sharif, accept my sincere congratulations on your election as prime minister…”

His telegram on the Kremlin website quoted Putin as saying relations between the two countries had been of a friendly and constructive nature.

Sharif’s stint as head of government would further fosters development of the wide-ranging Russian-Pakistani cooperation, partnership on Afghan settlement and countering terrorism, the telegram added.

Meanwhile, the new government in Islamabad underlined its desire to constructively engage with the US on promoting shared goals of peace, security, and development in the region.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said: “We welcome US reaffirmation of long-standing ties with Pakistan.”
