KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran has expelled 597 Afghans and started their headcount, sparking concerns among refugees, the government said on Monday.
The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation (MoRR) said the refugees were expelled from the neighbouring country on Saturday.
Earlier, Iran had expelled around 2,000 Afghan migrants. The expulsion and arrests of Afghans by Iranian authorities recently triggered protests in Afghanistan
Asifa Stanikzai, a refugee rights campaigner, told Tolo News in Iran: “The strategy of a headcount of Afghan migrants was largely welcomed while some migrants are worried that their existing documents may not be renewed.”
