TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Public health officials in northern Takhar province say 2.5 tons of expired food products collected from shops in Taloqan city, the provincial capital, were torched.

Dr. Sultan Mahmoud Ahmadi, head of general environmental health at Takhar Department of Public Health, says they launched the campaign in Taloqan and districts to collect expired food items considering the bad economic situation of people and prevention of diseases.

He said that 2.5 tons of expired food products collected in the last three months were set ablaze.

Ahmadi said that shopkeepers who kept expired items would be first warned and then fined if the violation was repeated.

Takhar people welcomed the move of the provincial public health officials.

Nusratullah Ebrahimi, a resident of Taloqan, told Pajhwok that it was the first time they saw torching of expired food items by the new administration.

He said that this process should be implemented in districts as well.
