KABUL (Pajhwok): Twenty-one people, including 19 children, have been killed in a shooting at a school in the Texas state of the United States.

The shooting occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on Tuesday, the Texas Department of Public Safety was quoted as saying.

CNN reported the attacker, identified as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, was also killed. The gunman earlier shot his grandmother before the mass shooting.

Eva Mireles, a fourth-grade teacher, was among the fatalities. Lydia Martinez Delgado said her niece was killed.

At least 40 shootings in US schools, colleges and universities have occurred so far in 2022, leaving 31 people dead and more than 50 injured.

Texas Governor. Greg Abbott said the 18-year-old suspect had studied at Uvalde High School.

Wearing body armor, the attacker crashed his vehicle in a ditch near the school before trying to enter the premises.

Despite efforts by law-enforcement personnel to engage the gunman, he managed to enter several classrooms and started shooting his firearm.
