KABUL (Pajhwok): Greeting the Afghans on the eve of Eidul Adha, former president Hamid Karzai urged the caretaker government on Friday to reopen girls schools above sixth grade as soon as possible.
In a message from his office, Karzai said the development and prosperity of a society was directly linked to the knowledge, education and hard work of its people.
“We need trained and educated youth (girls and boys) in every field to serve the country and its people and stand on our feet,” he said.
For this purpose, he asked the caretaker government to provide education to girls and boys across the country and to reopen girls’ schools above the sixth grade as soon as possible.
Addressing the countrymen, Karzai said doing service to knowledge was a real and fundamental service to Afghanistan.
He also congratulated all the countrymen on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha and hoped that they would spend these days happily with their families and friends.
Karzai’s call for the opening of girls ‘classes above the sixth grade comes as many Afghans today launched a massive campaign on social media using the hashtag “open girls-schools.”
