Afghanistan ranked worst in terms of gender parity

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan has been ranked as the worst country in the world in terms of gender parity in the latest report from the World Economic Forum. Placed 146^th in the latest Global Gender Gap Report, released on Wednesday, Afghanistan is followed by neighbouring Pakistan.

The top five slots have been grabbed by Iceland, Finland, Norway, New Zealand and Sweden, while the five worst countries are Afghanistan, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran and Chad.

With the global gender gap closed by 68.1 per cent in 2022, the report said; “It will take 132 years to reach full (gender) parity. This represents a slight four-year improvement compared to the 2021 estimate (136 years to parity).”

Pakistan was ranked among the five countries with a gender gap greater than 5 percent. The other countries are Qatar, Azerbaijan, China and India.

Bangladesh, ranked 71 globally, is the top country in the region, followed by Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Bhutan, India, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
