MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in northern Balkh province say they are facing acute financial crisis due to poverty and joblessness and urge government to provide them with assistance.

Around 45,000 displaced families live to Mazar-i-Sharif City. These families have migrated to Mazar-i-Sharif due to drought and the past conflict.

Mauladad, who was displaced to Mazar-i-Sharif City from Faryab province recently, is currently living in a tent and facing financial hardships.

He said he had borrowed 80,000 afghanis and had no money return the loan and now wanted to sell his three-month-old daughter for the said amount.

As tears rolled down his cheeks, Mauladad urged the government and aid giving agencies to assist him.

Bibi Tajor, a displaced woman, said some children in the Mazar-i-Sharif camp were struggling with starvation and they might lose their lives if paid no attention.

Zarmina, another IDP woman, told Pajhwok that her daughter contracted a kind of skin disease and her hairs were falling.

Zarmina urged the government to pay attention to their health in addition to providing the IDPs with assistance.

Maulvi Juma Gul Mahraz, director of refugees and repatriation, acknowledged the problems of the displaced families and said about 45,000 families were displaced to Mazar-i-Sharif from various areas.

He said his department was striving to assist the displaced families with the help of some foreign NGOs.
