KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Costing 41 million afghanis, a number of development projects have been completed and put into service in southeastern Khost province.
The schemes including a water head, retaining walls, water reservoirs and cleaning of canals, were executed in Torkan area of Terzai Alisher district.
Funded by the World Food Program, projects were implemented by the Afghan Development Organization.
Abdul Saboor, provincial official of the Afghan Development Organization in Khost, told Pajhwok these projects included 350 meters of retaining wall, cleaning of a 42-kilometer canal and a water head.
He said the projects took six months to complete and nearly 1,600 people were provided with work opportunity.
He said with the projects’ implementation, hundreds of acres of land was protected from destruction due to floods.
Economy Department head Pir Shahzada said the main purpose of implementing such projects was to provide work opportunities to common people.
He added the provincial government’s policy was to give priority to development instead of humanitarian aid.
Meanwhile, a tribal elder from Torkan area, Syedullah, told Pajhwok the retaining wall and other projects helped make arable their hundreds of acres of barren land.
He urged the provincial government and the current caretaker government to pay serious attention to the implementation of such projects.
