NEILI (Pajhwok): Abdullah, a resident of central Daikundi province who has quit drugs after 25 years of addiction, says he enjoys living with his family.

A resident of the Tamzan village of Pato district, the 39-year-old man previously lived beneath culverts and bridges under miserable circumstances.

In hindsight, he realises, the use of narcotics brought one only misery and contempt. Addicts were generally exorcised by families and society, he admits.

As a result of family pressure, Abdullah got admitted to a private rehabilitation facility called Itimad-i-Naveen in Daikundi province. After four months of treatment, he fully recovered and is pleased living again with his loved ones.

“Initially, when I was going home, my two children were scared of me and ran away. But when I leave home now, they fall into my arms as a token of love,” he remarks.

While underlining the need doe the rehabilitation of addicts, he believes the population of druggies is swelling due to family negligence and uncaring attitude of society.

Abdullah wants the government to address the situation of drug addicts. He is urging health officials to open rehabilitation centers. Security organs must move decisively to crack down on the sale of drugs.

However, security officials insist they are doing all they can to prevent drug smuggling and consumption.

Maulvi Hashim Nizam, director of counter-narcotics, said based on their estimate, there were more than 45,000 drug addicts in the province.

He maintained security forces were active in border areas, districts and cities of Daikundi and had arrested many drug smugglers.

To eliminate or control the consumption of drugs, the Islamic Emirate must establish more rehabilitation centres in the province, the official stressed.
