PARON (Pajhwok): More than half of the schools in Nurgaram district of eastern Nuristan province are without buildings and most classes have no teachers, hampering the education process.
Syed Khalilullah Haidari, Nurgaram district education officer, told Pajhwok Afghan News only eight out of 27 schools in the district had buildings and the remaining 19 had no buildings and as a result students were facing numerous problems.
The schools that lack buildings include three high schools (two for boys and one for girls), twelve primary and as many secondary schools. Haidari said 5,700 students, including more than 1,800 girls, studied in these schools.
He said only 114 teachers taught to the mentioned number of students while a total of 270 teachers were required. He said 156 more teachers should be appointed to solve the shortage problem.
Bazmir, the headmaster of Pashgar Boys Middle School of the district, said they huddled students of two different classes in one class due to shortage of teachers. “This is against the principles of teaching, but we have no choice.”
He also said many schools lacked buildings and students attended classes under trees, urging the government to solve their problems.
Nuristan Education Director Maulvi Taj Muhammad Mutmain acknowledged these problems and said recently a seven-member delegation from Kabul visited the province to assess problems.
He told Pajhwok the delegation visited all districts to closely observe the problems in the field of education and to find solutions.
Nuristan has been facing many problems in the field of education including lack of school buildings, professional teachers, textbooks and equipment for 70 percent of schools.
