74 wells dug in Laghman to address potable water issue

MEHTHARLAM (Pajhwok): At least 74 deep water wells have been dug up at a cost of 28 million afghanis in Qarghayee district and Mehtarlam, the capital of eastern Laghman province.

Maulvi Salamat Khan Bilal, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “About 74 deep wells had been dug up with financial support from the International Rescue Committee (IRC).”

He said 37 wells were dug up in Qarghayee and 37 in Mehtarlam. About 2,450 families have found access to clean drinking water.

Residents said they had no access to drinking water and their problem would be resolved to some extent with the implementation of the projects.

Zahidullah Musazai, a resident of Qarghayee district, said: “We did not have access to clean drinking water and had to fetch it from distant areas.”

He hoped the issue would be addressed with the digging of the wells.
