PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Three projects costing 60 million afghanis have been completed in the Azra district of central Logar province, an official said on Saturday.

The projects included graveling of a seven-kilometer road, construction of a 600-meter retaining wall and cleaning of a 47-km canal.

Maulvi Mohammad Qasim, provincial Rural Rehabilitation and Development director, told Pajhwok Afghan News the World Food Program (WFP)-funded projects consumed 60 million afghanis and took six months to complete.

He said 800 local residents were provided with work for six months and 2000 families would directly benefit from the projects.

Qasim said similar projects would be implemented in Pul-i-Alam and some districts with the help of aid agencies.

Haji Abdul Rahman, a tribal leader from Azra district, told Pajhwok Afghan News the newly completed projects would benefit residents of Koza Chotra, Akbar Khel and Babra villages in the areas of transportation, flood prevention and agricultural development.

Another resident of Azra district, Rahimullah, told Pajhwok he worked as a laborer in the projects for six months and received around 10,000 afghanis salary per month.

He said the projects offered him and hundreds of unemployed youth of Azra district a good opportunity to work.

WFO has engaged around 2,000 people in Pul-i-Alam, Mohammad Agha and Baraki Barak districts in various reconstruction projects.
