KABUL (Pajhwok): The world is short of 900,000 midwives and the deficits are highest in the areas where needs are greatest, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said in a report on Friday on the occasion of International Day of the Midwife.
The report said the single most important factor in stopping preventable maternal and newborn deaths was access to midwives.
“Addressing this deficit could prevent two-thirds of maternal and newborn deaths, saving more than 4.3 million lives a year by 2035,” the report said.
