KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran is optimistic about the amicable settlement of a long-running water dispute with Afghanistan this year.
Iranian government departments were pursuing the country’s water share from the Helmand River, said the Iranian ambassador to Afghanistan.
Hassan Kazemi-Qomi, who is also Iran’s special envoy for Afghanistan, urged caretaker government in Kabul to respect the 1973 Helmand River Treaty.
Mehr News Agency quoted him as saying: “The treaty is a legal issue, to which the Afghan government is committed and has declared its adherence. It must also implement the treaty.
Under the agreement, Iran says, it should get an annual share of 820 million cubic meters of water from Helmand River.
