PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): More than 50 illegal Afghan nationals have been detained during a fresh operation in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi
Karachi police said they had arrested 51 illegal Afghan citizens near the Sohrab Goth area of the sprawling city, which have seen a string of raids on aliens without valid residency documents.
Dawn quoted senior police officer Syed Irfan Bahadur as saying: “More than 200 policemen including ladies police encircled Gana Mandi in Sohrab Goth.”
He said the operation was conducted on the basis of a report regarding the presence of criminal elements in the locality.
With entry and exit points sealed, police carried out a house-to-house search launched and the record of suspicious persons checked through biometric verification.
Bahadur added: “51 illegal Afghan citizens were arrested and 10 motorcycles seized.” The record of detainees is being further verified.
Over 700 foreign nationals were arrested earlier in the week in Islamabad and Quetta. They were booked under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act and are currently in prison on judicial remand.
But 623 people were released after they produced the requisite legal documents before the authorities concerned.
