Ghazni’s Zana Khan elders demand education facilities

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Tribal elders in Zana Khan district of southern Ghazni province have asked the government to provide education facilities for children of the area.

The elders say they are concerned about children’s lack of access to education in the district.

Haji Hazrat, one of the tribal elders, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had made many attempts during the past two decades to establish schools for their children, but their efforts bore no fruits due to the wars and some other problems.

He said there were about 100 villages in the district and up to 40,000 children were deprived of education.

He expressed his concern about the future of their children and said if they were paid no attention, they would grow up in the darkness of ignorance.

Sayed Rahman, another tribal elder, said the people were not interested in sending their children to schools in the past, but now they wanted their children to be educated.

He said no attention was paid to the education sector in the past and the current government to provide children access to education.

Education Department officials accept the problems mentioned by Zana Khan district elders and blame the previous government and wars for the current situation.

Sibghatullah Ahmadi, the provincial education department head, told Pajhwok: “We have shared the problems of Zana Kahn district residents with the Ministry of Education (MoE) for solution.”

He added the lack of schools, textbooks, school buildings and the shortages of professional teachers were common issues not only in Ghazni but in many provinces.

Zana Khan is a mountainous district situated 30 kilometers northeast of Ghazni city and encompasses over 100 villages, with only two schools.

Besides Zana Khan, residents of many other remote districts of Ghazni complain about not having access to public services and demand of the government to services in their areas.
