Herat public, private schools to remain closed till Monday

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Recent deadliest earthquakes in western Herat province have forced shops, universities and schools to remain shut besides inflicted heavy human and material losses.

Twelve days had been passed from the deadliest earthquakes in the province but still people stay outside their houses during the night due to the fear of aftershocks.

The situation is not easy for the families special for children to say outside in cold weather under the open sky.

Governor spokesperson Mawlavi Nisar Ahmad Elyas, said according to the direction of the Ministry of Education (MoE) all government schools shall remain shut until next Monday.

He said in some areas, schools do not have much structural stability and there is an urgent need to reduce possible risks to students due to earthquakes.

Mohammad Tahir, the 7th class student of Sultan Ghaysuddin High school’s who saught shelter at one of the orchard in Engil district, said he was worried about his studies and the lack of interest in school studies, adding that from the past 12 days he did not attended his school.

Government schools in the province are off from the past 10 days due to the possibility of earthquake.

Over 2,000 people, including women and children, were killed and injured as a result of earthquakes and aftershocks during the past two weeks in Herat province.

In addition, thousands of homes in Herat City and Zindajan, Gulran, Ghoryan, Engil and Kuhsan districts had been damaged or destroyed.
