FAIZABAD (Pajwhok): Poppy crop has been destroyed on 7,500 acres of land in in northeastern Badakhshan province during the last three months, an official said on Tuesday.

Deputy governor Qari Aminullah Tayeb told Pajhwok Afghan News the illicit crops were eradicated by the Poppy Eradication Committee in Kishim, Argo, Darayiim, Jurm, Tishkan, Khash, Shahr-e-Bozorg, Yaftal Payan, Wardoj, Baharak districts and Faizabad city.

He said the committee comprised representatives from the departments of counter-narcotics, agriculture and hajj and religious affairs.

Chemical materials and tractors were used in eradication of the illicit crop, he explained.

While appreciating people’s cooperation with security forces, the deputy governor said they conveyed the message of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) to the people in this regard.

On the other hand, Maulvi Saif-ul-Rahman Anab, a member of the poppy eradication committee, said poppy was destroyed on 3,000 acres land in various districts in the last one month.

Meanwhile, residents welcomed the development and praised the committee and hoped the farmers would not grow poppy anymore.

Khairullah, an inhabitant of the provincial capital, asked the government to assist farmers by providing with alternative seeds.
