KABUL (Pajhwok): Special education centres will be built in all provinces for blind and deaf persons next year, an official said on Tuesday.
Mawlavi Ghulam Saeed Ihsas, deputy head of the Afghanistan Technical and Vocational Institute (ATVI), pledged during the inauguration ceremony of a scientific symposium in Kabul.
In the symposium, organized with the cooperation of the Norwegian Committee, a very important issue, which is the education and training of the disabled and the provision of equal education facilities, was discussed.
He hailed the Norwegian Committee for the organization of this symposium and said: “In this area, our office has provided many services and prepared education for the special persons... there is need for practical steps when such events are organised.”
He further said: “This year and next year, we plan to establish an educational center for the blind and deaf in 34 provinces of the country and provide them with educational facilities so that they become self-sufficient.”
Mawlavi Ghulam Saeed said they planned to provide educational services for people with mental retardation in the future.
Terje Magnussonn Watterdal, country director NAC, said: “Our program today is about the inclusive education of the disabled in all sectors, the work in the inclusiveness of the disabled in the society has a long history, but they are still isolated in some parts”
He said the main purpose of this symposium was to focus on the rights of disabled persons.
He added: “Without any political considerations, it is necessary to be involved in the education sector of Afghanistan, which will be an important fact that we will reach in this symposium.”
Watterdal said: “We also had a symposium with the National Environmental Protection Agency of Afghanistan, where activists from Norway and Kabul gathered, the purpose of the symposium was for the National Environmental Protection Agency to participate in the United Nations International Conference on Climate Change, and fortunately, we learned last week that they participated there.”
