PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will reconstruct 50 schools in the provincial capital Pul-i-Alam and districts of central Logar province, an official said on Monday.
Logar Education Department spokesman Shahpur Arab told Pajhwok Afghan News these schools would be reconstructed within the next year at a cost of about 450,000 US dollars.
The renovation works included painting school buildings, doors, windows, walls and other necessary accessories and basic repairs, which will provide a suitable learning environment for about 40,000 students, he added.
Arab said the Education Department was trying to build structures for schools which lacked buildings of their own in the provincial capital and districts.
Meanwhile, Akhtar Mohammad, a resident of Logar, told Pajhwok Afghan News that he was happy that UNICEF was rebuilding 50 schools that were destroyed in the past wars and floods.
He stressed that the Ministry of Education should also build basic buildings for schools whose students are currently studying in the open.
According to officials, a total of 287 government schools are operational in Logar, of which 90 schools lack buildings and their students study in rented houses and in the open with many hardships.
