40,000 litres of milk produced, processed daily in Logar

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Central Logar province produces and processes 40,000 litres of milk daily before supplying it to Kabul and other neighbouring provinces.

Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Department spokesman Abdul Basir Shahid told Pajhwok Afghan News livestock farming had significantly improved in the province.

He noted local farmers processed and transported milk to the capital and surrounding areas on a daily basis.

The department had provided extensive support to livestock owners, particularly low-income families and women, who relied on dairy farming, the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, local dairy farmers expressed satisfaction with their business, saying it helped them meet their household expenses.

Ahmad Fawad, a resident of Pul-i-Alam, said: “I have two cows at home, producing up to 20 litres of milk daily. I sell it in the market. This income covers my family’s expenses.”

Similarly, Basira, another resident, said she knew hundreds of women engaged in livestock farming.

She underlined the need for professional training in dairy farming, milk collection and processing to enhance productivity.

“There are dozens of women, including myself, whose livestock produces tens of kilograms of milk daily. The price per kilogram ranges from 25 to 30 afghanis.”

Economist Shams-ur-Rahman said Logar’s climate and resources were suitable for livestock farming, contributing to its growth.

However, he pointed out that due to a lack of modern processing facilities, thousands of kilograms of milk was sold to other provinces at lower prices.

He urged the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock (MoAIL) and other organisations to establish proper dairy processing plants in Logar to stabilise prices and prevent losses.
