UN concerned at US joining war, American lawmakers mixed

KABUL (Pajhwok): The UN Secretary-General has expressed concern over US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and called for a reduction in tensions and US Congress members called President Trumps decision to attack Iran as ‘inappropriate’ while others termed it a violation of the US Constitution.

The Iran-Israel conflict entered the tenth day on Monday, with both sides carrying out air and missile attacks on each other, and both suffered casualties and damage, but exact number is unknown.

Now the US has directly involved itself in this war.

US President Donald Trump announced he had launched strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Natanz, and Frodo, and after the attacks, he warned Iran to make peace or “future attacks will be even more severe”.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have warned that “the war has begun for us” after the US attack on the country’s nuclear facilities.

Deputy political director for Sada va Sima television said all nuclear facilities had been evacuated before US attacks and these facilities were not damaged.

Reactions

Some members of Congress, including Republican US Senator Roger Wicker, have called Trump’s decision to attack Iran the right one.

The decision was a well-considered and correct decision, Roger Wicker added.

Some other members of Congress, including Republican Senator Thomas Massie, criticized the decision, calling it unconstitutional.

Representative Sarah Jacob, a Democrat from California explained the attacks were a provocation that would drag the United States into another endless and bloody war.

According to reports, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the US attacks on Iran.

“This is a serious escalation of tensions in the region and a direct threat to regional and global security”.

The war could spiral out of control, with harm to civilians, the region and the world, Gutterres added.

He asked UN member countries to reduce tensions in accordance with the organization’s Charter and international law.
