KABUL (Pajhwok): The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has condemned April 27 coup and described April 28 as a historic day of victory and pride for the country.
On April 27, 1978, the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan staged a coup, overthrowing the government of then President Sardar Mohammad Daoud. Following the takeover, Afghans rose against the communist government and on December 27, 1979, Soviet forces invaded Afghanistan in support of the regime.
As a result of Afghan resistance, Soviet troops withdrew from the country on February 15, 1989. On April 28, 1992, power was taken by some Mujahideen groups, after which infighting broke out among factions in Kabul, involving some generals from the Najibullah government.
IEA chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid wrote on his X account that 48 years ago, on April 27, 1978, a group of communists carried out a military coup against the then government, paving the way for communist aggression.
“This was done to occupy Afghanistan and impose a foreign communist ideology. However, the Mujahideen and freedom-seeking Muslims of Afghanistan, despite limited resources, did not allow the Soviet colonial ambitions of the 20th century to succeed. They fought bravely for 14 years and ultimately achieved a great victory, success, and independence on April 28, 1992,” he said.
Mujahid added that the IEA condemned the April 27 coup and the communist invasion of Afghanistan, while describing April 28 as a historic day of victory and pride that should be commemorated.
He noted that at the time, the oppressed people of Afghanistan welcomed the outcome of their 14-year struggle, hoping to live in peace under a system of their choice. However, internal conflicts and factional fighting undermined those hopes and delayed the establishment of a purely Islamic system.
He further added that on the occasion of April 27 and 28, the IEA once again emphasised that, having achieved its goals of restoring unity, ending disorder, and establishing a Sharia-based system, it was now time to firmly safeguard that system.
According to him, Afghans should remain united and committed to ensuring the continuity and stability of an Islamic system in the country.
