KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran and Israel have exchanged strikes, with both sides targeting sites in each other’s territory. Iran has reportedly closed the airspace around Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport following the attacks.
According to reports, Israel carried out airstrikes on Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, on Sunday despite a ceasefire with the country.
Iranian media say Iran responded to the Israeli strikes on Beirut by launching missile attacks against Israel.
Tasnim News Agency reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) used “Kheibar Shekan” missiles in the strikes against Israel. The missiles were reportedly launched from western Iranian bases toward Israel’s Ramat David airbase.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Israel has also carried out strikes on locations inside Iran.
Tasnim reported that explosions were heard in Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz, and several other areas in western Iran. It also reported explosions near Karaj.
However, no further details have been released regarding potential casualties or the extent of the damage.
Al Jazeera also reported that explosions shook the cities of Tehran, Tabriz, and Isfahan.
The Associated Press reported that Iran closed the airspace around Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, the country’s main airport, following Israeli strikes. It added that explosions were heard in Isfahan, Karaj, Tabriz, and Tehran.
A witness in Tehran told the Associated Press that they heard at least one large explosion in the western part of the capital.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said he would speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and urge him not to respond to Iran’s attacks.
Trump told Fox News that Iran’s actions could negatively affect ongoing negotiations and called on Tehran to return to talks.
