KABUL (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump has warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel could face the consequences alone if hostilities with Iran resume without Washington’s support.
He also called Netanyahu and told him to stop the strikes during a phone conversation, Al Jazeera reported.
In an interview with Axios, Trump said he had warned Netanyahu about the consequences of continuing the war.
“I said, ‘Bibi, you had better be careful, or you will be on your own very soon’,” Trump said.
The latest tensions escalated after an Israeli airstrike on Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, on Sunday.
In response, Iran launched several missiles towards northern Israel, after which Israel struck targets inside Iran, including air defence systems and a petrochemical complex.
Iran, in turn, targeted similar facilities in the city of Haifa and two Israeli military bases.
Officials said that despite the exchange of attacks, no casualties had so far been reported on either side.
Netanyahu said in a televised statement that he had told Trump that “Israel has a full right to self-defence, and we are exercising it as required”.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei blamed the United States for escalating tensions and said Washington, as one of the parties involved in the ceasefire negotiations, would bear responsibility for any violation of the agreement.
