KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran has described recent US strikes on several targets along the country’s southern coast as “military aggression”, saying the attacks were a clear violation of the UN Charter and the memorandum of understanding on ending the war.

In a statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the US military had attacked several surveillance centres on Iran’s southern coast early Wednesday, in violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.

It said the strikes also constituted a serious violation of the first clause of the war-ending memorandum of understanding, which calls for a halt to military operations.

The statement added that repeated attacks against Iran, the US Treasury Department’s recent decision to revoke a licence for Iranian oil sales, what it described as violations of Iran’s arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz and continued Israeli attacks and actions against Lebanon had undermined key elements of the war-ending agreement.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry held the US responsible for the consequences of any escalation of tensions.

The ministry strongly condemned what it called US attacks and repeated breaches of commitments.

It said that, given the responsibilities of the UN Security Council and the UN secretary-general in maintaining international peace and security, Iran’s armed forces would, under Article 51 of the UN Charter, target the source and origin of any aggression in defence of the country’s territorial integrity, national sovereignty and security.

The United States and Iran reported fresh attacks on each other earlier on Wednesday.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had carried out new strikes on several targets in Iran, while Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had launched missile attacks on US bases in the region in response.
