KABUL (Pajhwok): Lindsey Graham, a veteran Republican senator from South Carolina, has died at the age of 71 following a brief and sudden illness.
According to The Washington Post, Graham’s office announced in a statement early Sunday that the longtime senator died on Saturday night.
“On the evening of Saturday, July 11, US Senator Lindsey Graham passed away following a brief and sudden illness,” the statement said.
“Senator Graham’s family appreciates the prayers and support at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.”
No further details have been released about the cause of his illness.
Graham was a prominent figure in the Republican Party and represented South Carolina in the US Senate.
Throughout his political career, he played an influential role in foreign policy, national security and defence issues. In recent years, he was also known as one of the closest political allies of US President Donald Trump.
