KABUL (Pajhwok): The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and Amnesty International have called for comprehensive, independent and impartial investigations into a recent blast at an educational centre in Kabul’s Dasht-i-Barchi area.

They also urged authorities to ensure the safety of educational facilities and civilians.

The blast occurred on Monday afternoon at the private Shama Hedayat School in Mahdia Township, in the 18th police district of Dasht-i-Barchi.

A security source told Pajhwok on Tuesday evening that 52 people had been injured in the incident.

UNAMA expressed sympathy with the injured children and their families, saying at least 42 children aged between nine and 14 were wounded in the blast.

The UN mission called for an investigation to establish how the incident occurred and stressed that schools and other educational facilities must remain safe places for children.

Amnesty International also expressed concern over the incident and called on the Islamic Emirate authorities to ensure the protection of civilians, including ethnic and religious minorities.

The rights organisation called for a comprehensive, effective, independent and impartial investigation in line with international law and standards.

It also stressed that anyone suspected of involvement in the incident should be held accountable through a fair judicial process.
