KABUL (Pajhwok): Six Afghan and Cuban nationals deported from the United States have arrived in Guyana under a one-year agreement between Washington and Georgetown, officials said.
Guyana’s Foreign Minister Robert Persaud said the six arrived on Friday after being vetted and found to have no criminal records. Most were deported over immigration-related violations, the Associated Press reported.
Persaud said the agreement followed months of negotiations and does not mean the individuals will be permanently settled in Guyana. They will remain there while their immigration status is determined and could later be returned to their home countries or transferred elsewhere.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) will implement the programme, while Guyana will not bear the costs of accommodation or support.
Persaud said the United States had not made any further requests to transfer deportees to Guyana.
On Aug. 29, the US deported dozens of migrants to the Central African Republic, including 12 Afghans, eight Iranians and nationals of Nepal and Nicaragua.
