KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 72 Sudanese workers have been killed in an airstrike on a gold mine near the Egypt-Sudan border, a media report said on Monday.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that the strike took place on Saturday. Emergency Lawyers, an organisation that documents human rights violations during Sudan’s war, accused the Egyptian military of carrying out the attack.
However, AFP said it had been unable to independently verify the allegation. The Egyptian government has not yet issued an official comment on the incident.
Two survivors said many workers had been at the site when the attack occurred, forcing people to flee towards the mountains to save their lives.
They said they had seen the bodies of several victims and feared that more people might still be trapped under the rubble.
According to the report, this was the second attack this year on an informal gold-mining site in Jabal al-Uqaydat.
In a similar attack in June, 23 workers were also killed.
