Militant group surrenders in Jawzjan

SHIBERGHAN (PAN): A 12-member militant group has joined the peace process in the northern province of Jawzjan, officials said on Thursday.

Led by Mohammad Azim, the group members turned in their 12 weapons after joining the reconciliation programme in Qush Tepa district, the provincial high peace council Abdul Hai Hayat, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The group leader said he cooperated with the Taliban over the past three years.

After being encouraged by tribal elders, he joined the peace parleys after continuously seeing his former comrades victimising ordinary people and carrying out disruptive activities.

The surrendering men had vowed to help improve security in the district, the Qush Tepa district chief, Aminullah, said. He said the ex-fighters would be recruited into police and a post for them established in Taraghli village.

Since its inception, the high peace council in Jawzjan had been able to convince more than 350 militants into joining the peace process.
