Presidential Chief of Staff Karim Khuram levelled the allegation during a July 16 interview with a private TV channel in Kabul. The opening of the Taliban office in Doha was a conspiracy to divide Afghanistan, he said, adding the US, Pakistan and Qatar were behind the plot.
“It is nonsense and completely without foundation,” the ambassador said of Khurram’s accusation. The US supported a peaceful, democratic and united Afghanistan, he insisted.
“We have not spent blood and resources … in pursuit of any other purpose than a stable Afghanistan that can provide for the security of its people, strengthen its institutions and pursue the future which its people deserve,” he explained.
The diplomat said in a statement on the US embassy website that Afghans were responsible for making decisions about the future of their country.
In next year’s polls, an outcome which is broadly accepted by Afghans, no matter who they vote for, is essential for Afghanistan’s future, according to Cunningham.
“Afghanistan will continue to have a strong, committed partner in the United States as Afghans build their own future. The Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) we are negotiating is similar to agreements we have with many of our friends around the world.
“It will make possible our continued security cooperation after 2014, and we are ready to resume these negotiations at any time,” the ambassador concluded.
