Nuristanis demand professional teachers

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A number of residents of eastern Nuristan province on Sunday complained about the absence of professional and competent teachers in educational institutions.

Though some schools had been closed, yet functional educational institutions were facing an acute shortage of dedicated teaching staff, locals said.

Wasimullah, a dweller of the provincial capital Paron, told Pajhwok Afghan News the school in his locality had a number of teachers but one of them was professionally trained.

If professional teachers were hired in educational institutions, he was sure the situation in the province would dramatically change. “Most of schools are without proper buildings and qualified staff.”

Khisro Usmani, head of Nuristan’s Youth Organisation, said most of students completed their basic education but their learning level remained dismally low.

Most of teachers were 12^th graders with no professional training, he said, asking: “What a teacher with this qualification can teach his pupils?”

He asked the Higher Education Ministry to recruit professional teachers in the province with decent packages, which would help students find better learning and career opportunities.

Amanullah Inayat-u-Rehman, the provincial council deputy head, acknowledged most of the schools had no buildings. “Greater focus should be kept on promoting education for a prosperous future of the nation.”

Pajhwok Afghan News made several attempts but could not get the view point of the education department.

Nuristan Governor Mohammad Tamim also acknowledged schools had been facing a shortage of professional teachers in the province. “We have asked the ministry to resolve the issues facing our education sector.”
