Amu River’s bank emergency reinforcement work kicks off

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): The emergency reinforcement work of parts of Amor River’s bank in the Shortipah district of northern Balkh province has started, an official said on Monday.

Syed Ghulam Mashwani, head of the Amu River Reinforcement project, said 100 million allocated for the emergency reinforcement out of which 80 million afs had been spent on the reinforcement work in four provinces --- Takhar, Kunduz, Balkh and Jawzjan provinces.

Mashwani said the reinforcement work was underway and added 762 million afs were allocated for basic reinforcement work.

According to Mashwani, work in the Hazar Toqi village which started on Sunday was not part of their plan but added the destruction of Amu River was at large scale in this area and therefore they started the work here.

Bahram Monib, in charge of the Amur River Reinforcement in Balkh, said so far reinforcement work had been done in 23 points in Shortipah district which helped stop the destruction or river side.

He said the work they had carried out helped protect hundreds of acres of agriculture land from destruction, tens of houses and madrassas from destruction.

Meanwhile local residents have demanded the start of basic reinforcement work on the Amu River banks.
