Faiq says representing Afghanistan in UNGA

ATLANTA (Pajhwok): Permanent representative of the previous government to the United Nations, Nasir Ahmad Faiq, has said he is participating in the ongoing annual general session of the world’s body on behalf of Afghanistan.

Earlier, reports emerged that Afghanistan’s seat in the UN general assembly will be vacant and no one will represent the country.

But Faiq told the BBC he participated in the annual general assembly and side meetings on behalf of Afghanistan.

He added that next week the UN Security Council would convene a special meeting on Afghanistan and he would present Afghanistan in that huddle.

Almost two years ago, former permanent representative of Afghanistan in the United Nations, Ghulam Ishaqzai, resigned and was replaced by Faiq, who is still considered official representative of Afghanistan.

Faiq said as per UN protocol, his name was on the bottom of the list of speakers because presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers had to speak before permanent representatives.

The caretaker government sent a letter to participate in the United Nations General Assembly two years ago and introduced its political office head in Qatar, Sohail Shaheen, as representative, but the United Nations rejected the request.

The United Nations General Assembly is held every year and world leaders renew their pledges to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
