KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has been re-elected as speaker for a seventh consecutive term, a media report said on Monday.
Following the start of US and Israeli attacks on Iran on 28 February 2026, sessions of the Iranian parliament were suspended, with only one online session held for decision-making purposes.
Iran’s parliament held its first in-person session since the outbreak of conflict with the United States and Israel on Monday, Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
During the session, lawmakers elected the parliament’s leadership board, with Ghalibaf securing 235 votes out of 271 cast to retain his position as speaker.
His rivals, Mohammad Taghi Naghdi Ali and Othman Salari, received 29 and seven votes respectively.
Ghalibaf is considered one of Iran’s prominent political figures and previously headed Tehran’s negotiating team during talks with Washington.
