HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Seventy-one, including five women, have been set free from the central jail in western Herat province after they were pardoned under a presidential decree, an official said on Wednesday.
The Presidential decree pardoning the inmates has been issued on the occasion of Eid Miladun Nabi, said the provincial jail warden, Hamidullah Sadiqi.
He said jail terms of another 31 prisoners had been reduced under the presidential decree. Sadiqi asked the released inmates not to commit any crime hereafter.
According to Herat prison’s officials, as many as 3,000 individuals, among them 145 women, are being held inside the jail.
The inmates were freed on the eve of a planned release of about 81 political prisoners belonging to the Hezb-i-Islami.
