WASHINGTON (PAN (UNAMA) for a year to continue supporting crucial security transition in the country.
In an unanimous resolution, the 15-membered body decided the UNAMA would continue to “lead and coordinate” international civilian efforts in the country in accordance with the results of international conferences.
The council reaffirmed the mission would continue to lead international efforts to strengthen the role of Afghan institutions in democratic governance, the rule of law, control of drugs, human rights, humanitarian assistance and related areas.
Adopting the resolution a day after it held a discussion on the current situation in Afghanistan, the Security Council reiterated the need to ensure the security of United Nations staff.
Stressing the importance of a continued presence of UNAMA and other UN agencies, funds and programmes in provinces, the resolution encouraged the Afghan government to make use of the mission’s good offices in reconciliation efforts.
