GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Warlords and other powerful individuals have grabbed up to 10,000 acres of state land in southern Ghazni province, a public representative said on Tuesday.

Addressing a three days consultative workshop in Ghazni City on Tuesday, the deputy head of the provincial council expressed displeasure over the municipality’s inaction to retake the land.

Abdul Jami said nearly 10,000 acres of land had illegally been seized by warlords in the provincial capital. As the strongmen sold the land at high prices, nobody had so far addressed the issue, he regretted.

“Over the past 10 years, the municipality has existed only on paper; it has done nothing to spruce up the province and protect state property,” the official remarked.

Deputy Governor Mohammad Ali Ahmadi acknowledged encroachment on state land in the province and said they had launched efforts to retake the government property.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Abdul Basir Noori said they would consult the workshop participants on framing a new municipal law. However, he did not comment on the land-grab issue.
