96 freed from Faryab, Wardak prisons

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Ninety-six prisoners, including three women, were released on Sunday in northwestern Faryab and central Maidan Wardak provinces in compliance with a presidential decree, officials said.

Faryab Court of Appeal Judge Habibullah Wasiq told Pajhwok Afghan News that President Hamid Karzai had issued the decree on the occasion of Mujahideen’s Victory Day.

One of the beneficiaries, Taj Gul, said he had been sentenced to four years in jail on the charge of drug trafficking. However, he spent only two years in prison.

Gul added he did not face any problem during the two years and jail officers treated all inmates well.

Another beneficiary, Din Mohammad, who was imprisoned in a murder case, served only two years in his jail. He alleged many inmates gambled and used drugs after the former jail chief was replaced few a months ago.

But Faryab Jail Commander Meer Kalam Panah rejected Din Mohammad’s claim. Seventy-three inmates were freed from Faryab jail. He added common inmates had been separated from drug addicts.

He added the prison had simultaneously been serving as an education centre for the inmates.

At least 23 prisoners were released from the Maidan Wardak central jail. Deputy Governor Ghazni Gul Zazai asked the beneficiaries to learn from imprisonment.
