HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Administrative chief of the Adraskan district of western Herat province on Saturday said at least eight schools in his district were dysfunctional due to a shortage of teachers.

Mohammad Mawdod Chishti told a press conference here the education process in Adraskan district faced two major challenges — lack of teachers and teaching materials — among others.

He said only 70 out of 370 teachers in the district were permanent and the rest hired against contracts.

“Only eight or seven of all these teachers hold bachelor’s degree and the rest are high school graduates”, said Chishti, who asked the government to take practical steps for employment of professional teachers in Adraskan schools.

Some contract-based teachers may be fired this year by the provincial education department, a move that would further complicate the situation, he said.

According to Chashti, 265 state-run schools in Adraskan district are operational.

Herat education director  Abdur Razaq Ahmadi said: “Teachers in Adraskan are high school graduates and they are hired to teach primary students.”

He said when no applicants appeared for teaching job in Adraskan district, the teaching posts of the district were given to other districts.

Local officials say the issue of teachers’ shortage in Adraskan district has been shared with the central government.

Governor’s spokesman, Jilani Farhad, said efforts at employing professional teachers in Adraskan district were underway.

Adraskan is a remote and comparatively unstable district of Heart that borders Iran.
