Hundreds of drought-hit farmers assisted in Samangan

AIBAK (Pajhwok): Hundreds of farmers affected by drought in Hazrat Sultan district of northern Samangan province on Thursday received wheat and rice in aid.

Rajal Ali Yousufi, head of the National Disaster Management Authority for Samangan, told Pajhwok Afghan News that 110 tons of wheat and 17 tons of rice provided by the central government was distributed to 1,074 farmers affected by drought in Hazrat Sultan district today.

He said 150 kilograms of wheat was distributed to 734 families each and 50 kilograms of rice to 240 families each.

Meanwhile, Sarajuddin Fitrat, the Hazrat Sultan district chief, stressed judicious distribution of the wheat aid and asked the delegation concerned to deliver the aid to farmers based on the already made list.

Jan Mohammad, 37, a resident of Hazrat Sultan district, said he used 161 kilograms of wheat as seed on his rain-fed land this year, but he harvested nothing due to the drought condition.  About the wheat and rice aid, he said it was enough for only two months.
