PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Construction work on buildings for scores of schools has been launched in central Logar province, officials said on Wednesday.
Education Director Abdul Wakeel Kaliwal said at an inauguration event the projects would be completed at a cost of 324 million afghanis in six months.
President Ashraf Ghani has evinced a personal interest in the project, according to the official, who said buildings would be constructed for 55 schools.
Digging water wells and establishing solar power systems for 26 schools and modern bathrooms for seven others is part of the scheme, which would cost 328 million afghanis.
Funds for the project would be released by the Iqra programme through citizen charter. It will facilitate the educational environment for 138,000 students, including 50,000 girls.
Governor Mohammad Anwar Khan Ishaqzai said the government had a strong and tangible will to develop and improve the education sector.
He urged people to send their children to school and also help the government in protecting school buildings.
Provincial Council Chairman Hasibullah Stanikzai asked the authorities concerned to pay serious heed to the quality of education.
