KASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Farmers in southern Helmand province have collected 190,000 tonnes of corn yield which is 16.5 percent higher compared to the last year’s yield, an official said on Saturday.
ZalmayAlko, head of the Helmand Agriculture Department, during an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News said corn had been cultivated on 38,000 hectares land in the province which produced 190,000 tonnes of corns.
“Compared to the last year there is increase of 16.5 percent in the corn yield,” he said.
Alko credited surge in corn yield as a result of professional training to the farmer and distribution of refined seeds.
He said Helmand’s corn has good market in the country and is dispatched to other provinces.
Alko added corn up to 900 metric tonnes daily dispatched to Kandahar City, Boldak, Kalat, Shajoy, Muqar district, Ghazni City, Logar and Kabul.
“After processing the corn is used for making food for human, livestock’s and oil,” he said.
Abdul Khaliq, a farmer from Nad Ali district said bumper corn produced in the province this year.
“Huge amount of corn yield is produced but there is no market and we want to create a huge market place,” he said.
Helmand is known for its various types of corps where besides corn cotton is produced on huge amount.
