KABUL may overrun the Afghan government after the pullout of foreign troops from the country under a peace pact signed last week, says the US president.

Speaking to journalists at the White House on Friday, Donald Trump asked countries to take care of themselves, “You can only hold someone’s hand for so long.”

According to NDC News, he told a questioner that the US had been in Afghanistan for 20 years. “But eventually, they’re going to have to protect themselves.”

Also on Friday, a media report said Washington had intelligence that the Taliban did not plan to stick to the commitments they made in last week’s peace treaty.

The Taliban saw the peace process as a way to ensure the pullout of US troops, the report said, indicating the insurgents could attack the government in Kabul.
