JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Local officials in eastern Nangarhar and Kunar provinces say that peach gardens produced significant harvest and the growers earned adequate income.
Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock department of Nangahrar, talked significant production of peach and at least 7,000 tons of the fresh fruit provided to the market so far.
Qasimullah, who has established peach orchard in his six acres of land in Surkh Road district since three years, said his one acre of garden produced fruit this year.
“I have collected 90 boxes of peach and each box contained three-kilogram of the fruit during the Ramadan where one kilogram of the fruit sold at 80-120 afghanis.
He said three years passed since he had established the garden and earned at least 120,000 afghanis so far.
Inamullah Safi, director of agriculture, told Pajhwok that earlier the growers were not satisfied with their cultivation harvest and they turned to build fruit gardens and it had good business.
He said dozens of peach gardens had been established in Shewa, Goshta, Kama and Surkh Road districts and they produced 7,000 tons yield this year.
Kunar Agriculture director Najibullah Adel said they had cultivated peach over 950 acres of land and of them 270 acres produced fruit.
He said besides providing work opportunities the growers received 2.8 million afghanis as income.
