KABUL and Iraq within days, international media reports say.

Sputnik quoted a senior administration official as saying the US president would the withdrawal announcement in the next few days.

Under the February 29 peace pact with the Taliban, all international forces will leave Afghanistan by the spring of 2021 if the insurgents live up to their security commitments.

According to Mehr News Agency, the expected drawdown in line with Trump’s previous commitment to cutting the number of US troops in both countries.

In August, Trump’s Defense Secretary Mark Esper said the number of US troops stationed in Afghanistan would be reduced to less than 5,000 in coming months.

At a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi last month, Trump said US troops would withdraw from the war-devastated Gulf country. However, he stopped short of giving a timetable.

As many as 8,600 US soldiers are currently stationed in Afghanistan. The Pentagon plans to get down to fewer than 5,000 troops as intra-Afghan peace talks look imminent.

Under the US-Taliban deal, all foreign troops must leave the country by the spring of 2021, in exchange for security commitments from the militants.
