AIBAK (Pajhwok): A restaurant catering to a female-only clientele has been opened for the first time in northern Samangan province, offering quality food.
Swita Khurram, owner of the restaurant, said she opened the restaurant in Market Suliman Bazaar area of Aibak city, the provincial capital, a week back.
Five women, including a manager, two cooks and two servants, are working in the restaurant.
Swita said the city’s restaurants served ordinary foods such as Kabab and Qabal-i-Polao to customers but her restaurant offered good foods such as Mantoo, Bolani and soup without oil and salt to customers.
She said, “I opened this restaurant because women in the province had no suitable place to sit and eat freely.”
She took the step as traditional and culture barriers in Samangan did not allow women to be alone in men’s restaurants.
She said they offered foods at prices from 50 afghanis to 150 afs and besides women dozens of nearby shopkeepers also bought food from her restaurant on a daily basis.
She said opening of the restaurant was the beginning of her work and she had the plan to develop the restaurant and build a kindergarten in Aibak city as well in future.
SimaGul, who along with her daughters arrived at the restaurant, said: “They had no such place in the past in Samangan, sometimes we faced with some difficulties while visiting a restaurant in the city so I am very happy by seeing such female-only restaurant and we are enjoying eating food here.”
Gulali Safai, women affairs department head, highly appreciated the move and urged other women to start business like Swita to take practical part in the country’s economic activities.
“Women, like men, can show competence in business and make progress in their society, she said.”
